What is liming necessary for?
High acidity of the soil is one of the reasons why vegetables give a low yield. With strong acidity, the effectiveness of fertilizer application decreases. The introduction of lime or dolomite flour significantly improves nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium nutrition, reduces the accumulation of heavy metals, enriches the soil with calcium and magnesium. In addition, this contributes to the development of beneficial soil microflora, improves soil properties, the quality of humus, thereby increasing fertility.
Many crops are sensitive to high acidity of the soil. These include beets, onions, cabbage, garlic, spinach, peppers, parsnips, currants. These crops give a good crop at pH values from 7.0 to 8.0. Cucumber, lettuce, cauliflower and kohlrabi, leeks grow well with almost neutral values of acidity - 6.0-6.5. The decrease in soil acidity to 4.5-5 causes a drop in productivity by 1.5-2 times. Tomato, sunflower, carrots, pumpkin, zucchini, parsley, radish, turnip, rhubarb can grow in a fairly wide range of pH values - from 5.0 to 7.5.
It is possible to understand that the soil requires liming by weeds. On acidic soils, horsetail, sorrel, chythorn, pike, ranunculus, ledum, heather grow.
After liming, the acidity of the soil remains at the obtained level for 3-4 years. It is best to apply calcareous fertilizers for digging soils. The action of calcareous fertilizers is longer on heavy, clay and loamy soils and less long on light sandy and sandy loamy soils.
When liming heavy soils, larger doses of lime are used than on the lungs. On light soils, the introduction of dolomite flour is especially effective. In addition, such soils are best limy in small doses. Depending on the type of soil, 70 to 800 g of lime is applied per 1 sq. M. The average figures at full liming are 100-200 g per 1 sq.m.
First of all, lime is brought under acid-sensitive crops - onions, beets, white cabbage. When growing potatoes, half doses are introduced, or they are planted for 3-4 years after liming, since the alkaline soil reaction provokes the occurrence of scab.
It is not recommended to apply limestone fertilizers together with slurry, phosphate rock and bone meal.
