We grow onions garlic Rokambol
Recently, amateur vegetable growers and, perhaps, professionals, are paying more and more attention to "overseas" plants. This is understandable: some of them are more effective in yield and more attractive in taste than our traditional garden crops. Take, for example, the Japanese radish - daikon, which has taken root well in our gardens. But it is impossible to say about such a vegetable as a rockambole, it is still rarely found in the beds of Russian summer residents, except in Siberia and the Urals, where the farmers, we think, are very active enthusiasts in the cultivation of overseas crops.
Rocambole, or comb hair (Egyptian onion, Spanish garlic, onion-garlic) is from Central Asia, where it is found even in the wild; according to some reports, it naturally grows also in Spain and Egypt. Today it is cultivated in Europe, the North Caucasus, China, Korea and Japan. Rockambol is especially popular in the Mediterranean countries - Spain, Turkey, Greece, Egypt and Morocco. This vegetable began to grow and Russian lovers of unusual plants. Although information about him appeared in Russia a very long time ago. So, in the book “Russian Garden, Nursery and Orchard”, published back in 1877, its author Schroeder wrote: “Rocambole resembles garlic (which it replaces), but is less pungent in taste. Its stem does not produce seeds. Dilution and preservation is the same as garlic. A perennial plant, bred in Central and Western Europe, in Germany and France, but not enough. "
Advantages of Rockambol.
This is a wonderful vegetable crop. Growing it is profitable and interesting. He is unpretentious, although he came from warm lands. It is well stored, very productive: even a small garden will completely provide the family with valuable vitamin products for the whole winter. Rocambole has a harmonious taste, persistent aroma of garlic and onion at the same time. Thanks to these qualities, it fully replaces both onions and garlic in many dishes, giving them a special piquant taste. In addition, rockambole is useful for people suffering from diseases of the stomach, it is used in folk medicine as a remedy.
So, rockambol is a perennial herbaceous plant with signs of onions and garlic. Its stem forms a strong arrow up to 1.5 m high with a beautiful spherical inflorescence, each of which consists of many lilac flowers, similar to small bells. The flowers are sterile, do not form seeds. At the rockambol, the bulbs are divided into teeth, but only in the second year of growth. Nutritional value are leaves and bulbs. The leaves of this plant are rich in vitamins, carbohydrates, essential oils, proteins, phytoncides, carotene, they contain a lot of ascorbic acid in comparison with other types of onions. In terms of chemical composition and taste, the rockambol is close to wild garlic growing in Siberia. They call it there - wild leek, and Siberians actively grow it. In appearance, the rockambole is similar to leek, only the first is more powerful. The bulb, which is divided into teeth, grows with good care and fertile soil more than 10 cm in diameter and can weigh up to 250 g. Unlike ordinary garlic, 10-15 bulbs are formed in the rock bulb on the bottom of the main bulb - 2 to 4 grams of children .
Rockambol cultivation is carried out with both teeth and single-tooth children. In the first year, large bulbs grown from children or teeth are similar to the bulbs of ordinary onions, they do not divide into teeth. When planting them the next year, they form an adult onion, divided into 5-7 cloves, resembling ordinary garlic in appearance. It is better to plant a rockambol in a sunny place in well-cultivated and fertilized soil. Favorable predecessors - legumes, cabbage, cucumbers, zucchini, grown with the use of manure and compost. It is better to make ridges since autumn, while placing them from south to north. Spring rockball is usually planted in moist soil in early spring. Before planting the beds, it is necessary to dig up to a depth of approximately 20 cm. It is also necessary to introduce humus or rotted compost into the soil in the amount of about half a bucket and 2-3 cups of furnace ash per square meter. Bulbs and cloves before planting should be sorted by size, which will allow you to get evenly developing plants.
Material for planting is prepared the day before planting. If a multi-tooth bulb is caught, then it needs to be peeled of excess husk and divided into cloves. At night, the prepared seeds are soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The distance between the rows is about 25-30 cm, and in the row - 15-20 cm. The seed placement depth is 9-10 cm. Large teeth can be planted a little less often and deeper than shallow ones.
For greater productivity, the bed should be mulched with humus, compost, peat with a total layer of 1-3 cm. The mulch layer will contribute to the best warming of the soil in early spring, will not allow the formation of crust on the surface of the soil, it will better retain moisture. After the first shoots appear, the earth should be loosened. At this time, the rockambol requires a sufficient amount of moisture. After watering or rain, when the top layer of the earth dries out a little, it is always loosened. If the plants begin to look weak, and the leaves acquire a pale green color, nutrition is needed. Immediately when the very first seedlings appear, you need to feed the plants with nitrogen fertilizers, and with the formation of bulbs - phosphorus-potash. Harvest the onion by drying out the leaves below, and when the top leaves begin to turn yellow and fall. It is undesirable to linger with the excavation, because the integumentary flakes can begin to collapse, and the bulbs at the same time break up into small teeth. In addition, overripe children, which are then difficult to find in the ground, are easily separated from the bulb. There is also a great danger of infection of the bottom of the bulbs with various rot.
Winter Rokambol planted in early October. In this case, the teeth can not be soaked. They are planted to a depth of up to ten centimeters, leaving a distance of up to twenty centimeters between the teeth. For a region with a cold climate, a bed of onions, for the winter, additionally cover with a layer of mulch to avoid the risk of freezing. After the emergence and formation of seedlings spacing neatly loosen. If necessary, you can very carefully loosen the soil and around the stem. You should not skimp on watering, especially in hot weather. Noticed: the hotter the summer turned out, the sharper the onion will be. He also needs timely weeding. Harvesting winter rockambole can be done already in the middle of summer, as it matures very quickly. If it is overexposed in the ground, then the heads can be divided into separate teeth, which makes it difficult to harvest. They prepare the rockball for storage and store it in the same way as ordinary garlic. It does not differ in the methods of use, as well as in taste, with the only difference being that it is less sharp.
