Double Leaf - Transparent Flower
Double leaf - a small genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the Barberry family. The genus contains only three species. Gray double leaf is widespread in Russia in the Far East (Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands), in Japan and China. Chinese bifolia is common in East Asia. The cinquefoil is a North American species.
The double name of the double leaf is diphilea (Diphylleia) comes from Greek. dio - two and phillon - sheet. This is due to the fact that the plant has only two leaves on long (up to 20 cm) petioles.
The bifolia is a very rare (listed in the Red Book) plant with beautiful white flowers and large leaves, perfect for use as a decorative one. The bifolia blooms in late May - June for several weeks. Thanks to its beautiful foliage, it is decorative throughout the growing season.
Bifolia is a perennial herb 40-50 cm tall with a horizontal rhizome. Rhizome is located at a depth of 3-6 cm from the soil surface. Leaves up to 50 cm wide, including 2, thyroid, with palmate venation, palmate-lobed. The first leaf is larger than the second. The inflorescence is apical. The scutellum averages 8-10, sometimes up to 30 flowers.
The diameter of the bifolia inflorescence is on average 6 cm (up to 8 cm). The flowers are white; sepals 6, similar to the petals; petals 6, flat. Stamens 6 free; anthers open upward with two wings; one pestle; stigma rounded, flatly compressed from above; ovules are few, arranged in two rows.
The fruits of the bifolia are juicy, dark blue, up to 2 cm in diameter, similar to small grapes. Ripen in July. Each berry contains 6–9 pear-shaped seeds. In August, the entire aboveground part dies.
Double Leaf Care
Mesophyte bifolia - this means that it is adapted to live in sufficiently (but not excessively) moist soil. It develops best in shady or semi-shady places, for example, under the crowns of trees. It grows well on loose fertile soils.
The bifolia plant is large but fragile. Its delicate leaves need protection from the wind and sufficient humidity.
Double leaf breeding
The double leaf grows rather slowly. Propagated both by division and by seed. When growing seeds, stratification is required for several months.
The plant blooms in the 4th-5th year.
The genus has three species:
- Gray DoubleDiphylleia grayi)
- Chinese DoubleDiphylleia sinensis)
- Two-leafed corymbose (Diphylleia cymosa)
Why is a "transparent flower"?
An interesting feature of the double leaf is that its flowers become translucent after rain. Therefore, abroad it is often called the Skeleton Flower (Skeleton) Flower. Also in America, the name of the double leaf is common - Umbrella-leaf.
