The most useful indoor plants for children
When choosing plants for landscaping a nursery, they often act on the contrary - they are looking for crops that can’t do much harm. Among indoor plants, it’s true, there are quite a few poisonous ones that are simply incompatible with the design of space for a child because of thorns, hard leaves or a deceptively appetizing look. But if you want to find plants that will become a colorful part of your baby’s life, you should still use other criteria. Indeed, for a children's room, it is better to select the most useful, and not the least dangerous types.
Criteria for selecting plants for a nursery
Evaluating indoor crops in terms of benefits is not the most popular option. Perhaps the reason for this is the generally accepted criteria for evaluating plants, in which toxicity is considered the most important of the negative "symptoms". But how plants purify the air or affect the atmosphere is often not mentioned at all.
If it is worth changing traditions when searching for the best gardening strategy, then it is when choosing species for a children's room.
Do not look for less harmful and less dangerous plants, just make a list of characteristics that are unacceptable for a child’s room. And concentrate on the other - on what benefit indoor plants can bring for a room in which your baby spends a lot of time.
All indoor plants produce oxygen, contributing to a healthy environment. But the “refreshing effect” is not the most important of the whole spectrum of the positive effect of plants on our homes. The decisive criteria for the selection of useful plants for children should be:
- color and harmonizing effect on the environment;
- the ability to neutralize and absorb toxins and harmful substances (including those released by furniture and detergents);
- phytoncidal properties;
- noise absorbing characteristics.
The correct selection of plants allows you to create a comfortable, healthy atmosphere with a minimal amount. Indeed, in the children's room it is inappropriate even the number of pots with plants, which is classical for other rooms. It is permissible to set only 3 to 5 small and medium-sized plants or 1-2 large plants corresponding to them in terms of “volume” of beneficial effects.
And they must always be in perfect condition: cleanliness, hygiene, timely cleaning of leaves and cleaning of plant debris are the only guarantees that the plants in the children's room will fulfill their "functions".
The psychological effect of plants on children
Looking for original, colorful and improving the space around you species of indoor plants for a child’s room, first of all, you should think about how they affect the interior from an aesthetic and psychological point of view. The fact that even one plant can create harmony or disrupt it is known not only by the experts of the ancient Feng Shui teachings, but also by interior designers.
Indoor plants with the right selection can both emphasize and hide all the shortcomings of the room itself, and furniture, and even textiles.
Color is the most important selection criterion. For the children's room, they often try to pick up plants with basic, clean, “acrylic” colors, the most colorful options. But just in the nursery the green color manifests itself most of all.
It brings peace and a calming effect on the nervous system, allows you to find the balance and harmony of the phases of activity and peace. You need to choose not the brightest, but medium or light, muted green - with a slight bluish, grayish tint or softened by the edge.
According to other criteria, it is better to focus on the interior and take into account general rules. Indoor plants will soften straight lines and sharp corners, if you choose openwork textures, transparent, multi-tiered, non-strict silhouettes.
To delimit the space and separate the zones from one another, you can visually increase the "volume" of the room if you choose elegant elongated tree-like forms with small leaves or lush shrubs, rather than large-leaved plants.
To create comfort in the working area, to draw to important corners for classes, reading, hobbies will help and sod, "pillow" and rosette effect of small accents.
From the point of view of the color palette and the effect on space, ideal plants for the nursery are rightly considered citrus fruits, stonecrops, peperomia, spicy herbs (rosemary, thyme, oregano), pelargonium and chlorophytum. Soothing effect and the look of the leaves saintpoly with their delicate palette of stains.
Phytoncide plants - the best for the nursery
The category of phytoncide plants is very arbitrary. These species include all plants that secrete essential oils and biologically active substances with immunity-enhancing and air-disinfecting properties. Phytoncides reduce the number of pathogenic microorganisms, bacteria, fungi, at least 2 times.
For example, peperomies “kill” even bacteria of the staphylococcus and streptococcus class. Phytoncide plants are able to beneficially affect the immune system and defenses even after half an hour stay next to them.
These are mood-enhancing and well-being species, they are often credited with “magical” properties - relieving headaches or depressed moods. But in fact, this is the effect of essential oils, which are almost not felt in the air.
The best volatile for children's room:
- aspidistra high;
- east flat-flow;
- Kalanchoe pinnate;
- scented Kalanchoe;
- aloe vera and tree-like (varieties with non-spiky leaves);
- Chinese hibiscus
- English or French lavender;
- common myrtle;
- Arabian coffee.
The fashion to grow your herbs and greens in pots is slowly spreading not only to the kitchen. Spicy herbs, which have no less phytoncidal properties than primordial indoor inhabitants, not only improve and heal the air: they grow quickly, are interesting in texture, tasty, cut well and look very elegant.

Rosemary, one of the best plants for the prevention of colds and diseases of the respiratory system, will happily settle in the nursery. But it is worth taking a closer look at other stars - thyme, especially variegated and originally colored varieties, marjoram, oregano, chives, with its thin leaves in elegant bushes, mint, lemon balm, catnip, lofant.
To the section of “useful” and edible plants, you can safely attribute potted strawberries, which look surprisingly joyful and are able to present a useful treat. Today, potted versions of fruit trees — even cherries or cherries — are increasingly appearing on sale. But they should prefer citrus fruits, which surprisingly change the atmosphere in the room.
"Stoppers" when choosing plants for children
A nursery is the simplest object for selecting species of indoor plants. After all, which plants cannot be used and why, obviously. It is enough to have at hand a list of those criteria that should immediately lead to the exclusion of a view from the list of suitable candidates.
Indoor ban are subject indoor plants that have any of the "dangerous" characteristics:
- the presence of dangerous bristles or spines;
- too hard or sharp edges of the leaves, which can be injured (for example, cereal leaves cut the skin no worse than thin paper);
- plants with an intense or unpleasant odor;
- crops belonging to the poisonous class - and having irritating mucous membranes and skin juice, and poisonous only when taken orally;
- species that the child is allergic to, their relatives, and all allergenically dangerous plants;
- plants that require complex care and a special environment, including content in shop windows or florariums.
Dear readers! When choosing plants, be sure to ask the views of the child. If he is already interested in growing, choose species that will easily give a “result” even with not very proper care. In any case, unpretentious and easily tolerating different surprises of culture is always the best choice.
