Away at the cottage, or How to create a harmonious garden on six acres?
Alla Alekseevna is a longtime friend of my grandmother. But, despite the significant difference in age, she calls me nothing more than "my girlfriend." Because we have one common love - growing plants. The garden of Alla Alekseevna is located next to the cottage of my parents, and every time I find myself in those parts, I try to visit this paradise. The owner of the cottage is not only a devoted fan of gardening, but also a person with a very good taste, and she has a lot to learn. In this article, I would like to take a virtual walk through her beautiful garden. Perhaps you will take note of several ideas implemented on its site.
First steps to the garden in a natural style
In her youth, Alla Alekseevna dreamed of becoming an agronomist and even planned to enter the agricultural institute, but fate decreed otherwise. And even his own summer house in a person who loves plants so much appeared at a fairly mature age. But this did not stop her from successfully realizing all her ideas and creating, finally, the garden of her dreams.
When the hostess ennobled the long-awaited six hundredths, the 90s were in the yard. Before the craze for landscape design was still very far away, and in the course of gardeners - the simplest plants. Glossy landscape magazines, in which one could peep interesting and stylish gardening ideas, could not be found during the day with fire. There was then no free access to the Internet. Nevertheless, the garden of Alla Alekseevna became completely unbanal, since her leader was a wonderful innate sense of taste.
Thanks to “my girlfriend” I learned to pay attention to the beauty of simple meadow flowers. I appreciated the possibility of decorating the garden, along with decorative cultural plants, charming representatives of the local flora. Only after 20 long years will the fashion for natural flower beds come to Russia. But Alla Alekseyevna and I already walked through the meadows and looked at the meadow plants with an eye. She already planted a lanceolate plantain and common geranium in her rock garden, while neighbors decorated their gardens mainly with marigolds and dahlias.
But a couple of decades will pass, and flower growers will begin to massively understand the beauty of geraniums and buy its many varieties, and even decorative forms of plantain will appear. But at that time, such ideas looked truly “non-standard”.
Traditional bright summers are also not alien to the mistress of this garden. Her favorite flower - petunia - she grows as container plants in spectacular flowerpots located near several recreation areas. They are also planted in barrels previously used to store irrigation water. Sometimes other bright flyers sit down to them to create more cheerful compositions.
But most often, Alla Alekseevna loves to plant varieties of petunias individually in large groups, which also looks very stylish and does not add excessive variegation to the garden. And, it would seem, well, there are petunias in almost any country house, but nevertheless, the garden of Alla Alekseevna is noticeably distinguished from other summer gardens, and this is noticeable even at a distance.
The main highlight of the site is the presence of slender junipers that grow as if they are uniting and supporting the garden slender columns. The many-faced conifers are very loved by the vast majority of gardeners, and it is their rich variety that often plays a trick on us. After all, cases when the garden turns into a variegated collection of “Christmas trees” of different colors and shapes are very common. Alla Alekseevna is not at all like that.
In addition to the huge ordinary spruce forest that meets us at the gate, in this garden there is only one species of coniferous - common juniper of a columnar shape. And other conifers of similar habitus are not here.
The varietal name of this juniper is currently lost, but judging by the external features, presumably this Juniper "Hybernik" (Juniperus communis hibernica) Once, the hostess planted a single tree in her garden, but the juniper liked the whole family so much that it was soon propagated and a whole juniper grove was created on six hundred parts.
The only place where juniper is not found in this garden is the garden zone, and the largest number of trees is concentrated in the favorite resting place of Alla Alekseevna in the back of the garden. And this is not accidental, because juniper significantly heals the air in the places where it grows. It is well known that juniper releases a large number of volatile compounds that ionize the air and have significant antiseptic properties to such an extent that the air in the juniper forest is literally very sterile.
There is evidence that “juniper air” has a positive effect in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, rhinitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, tonsillitis, tracheitis, and also stabilizes the psycho-emotional state of a person. Therefore, juniper for the hostess is not only one of the most beloved conifers and an element of landscape design, but also a green healer.
In this corner of the garden, another variation of common juniper is also planted - Suezica (Juniperus communis Suesica), which is distinguished from the Khibernika variety by a narrower and denser regular columnar shape. But in general, both varieties of juniper are very similar.
Thanks to this uniformity, the garden looks really stylish and strict. All other elements obeying a similar "columned hall" are combined into a single whole. Due to the fact that for the most part uniformity is not characteristic of ordinary summer residents who prefer to settle all that is possible on the site (with a trace of the world), this garden seems to be done by a professional designer.
Creeping species of conifers
Creeping species of conifers are mainly represented by ground cover juniper, supposedly horizontal, the varietal and species name of which is also, unfortunately, unknown to the owners. With this juniper there was once a frequent and instructive story for beginning summer residents. Acquired many years ago, a small coniferous twig, which was supposed to neatly lie among the stones, quietly turned into a thick dense green carpet, displacing all the plants available here.
The rock garden eventually had to be relocated to a new place, and the adult bush of creeping juniper among the stones turned into an independent composition.
Rock garden and its sculptures
The small rock garden in this garden is also not too colorful and is not oversaturated with a large number of species. At the same time, in addition to the plant component, here you can observe other inhabitants - garden sculptures. During the period when garden “gnomes” appeared on the market for sale, the taste also did not disappoint Alla Alekseevna, and she did not fill her garden with the motley that was foreign to our lands.
All sculptures of this garden are made in restrained colors and imitate the natural local fauna, while these are not “cartoony” fairy-tale figures, but naturalistic animal statues. Here is a gray shy little hare with very lively eyes and a shy bug, and a brooding frog. And among this lovely little world there is also the most real fauna - fast lizards, business-like thick toads, hedgehogs, which the hosts feed with porridge in the evenings, and a lot of other all kinds of animals live on pebbles.
Alla Alekseevna, in addition, is a big lover of indoor flowers, and every summer takes them to her summer house, harmoniously integrating home plants into the garden design. For example, she places succulents in hanging baskets, geraniums in containers, and sometimes she plants pelargonium directly on a flower bed, and she places coleus among garden plants.
There are mistresses on the plot and a place for a small garden. Alla Alekseevna and her husband are far from young people, so they have a small garden: tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and, of course, several pumpkin bushes. One of the hostess's favorite varieties is “Sweetie”, because it not only takes up little space, thanks to its short lashes, but also produces many delicious fruits.
Alla Alekseevna is not one of those summer residents who will be "killed" in the garden, even if health and age would give such an opportunity. She knows how to enjoy life and always finds time to embroider a beautiful picture near a small pond, listen to birdsong, admire beautiful flowers ... Summer is so fleeting and you need to breathe enough and enjoy it before you return to the city apartment ...
Dear readers! If you can accurately determine the variety and species of the junipers mentioned in the article from the photographs presented, please write about this in the comments.
