DIY dream garden - a real story
Such stories are inspiring because they make you believe in your own strength. Such people cause sincere admiration, because their unusually beautiful garden speaks not only about the impeccable taste of the owners, but also about the tremendous work that they put into each square meter of it. Without gardeners. Without landscape designers. In the truest sense of the word, with their own hands the spouses Voropaev from the Dnieper managed to create a garden that you can only dream of. Although, wait, why dream? If someone succeeded, then why not try it? Read an interview with the owner of the Eva Garden, watch beautiful photos, get inspired and plan the next season!
From the cottage - to "Eve"
- Lyudmila, tell us how your garden began? How long have you been going to him?
We started to get involved in gardening a very long time ago. First experimented at the grandmother's cottage. She was very small, a little over five hundred parts. But so beautiful! And very comfortable. However, the time came when my husband and I realized that our desires and aspirations had already outgrown the possibilities of this small site. I wanted space. Places where you could give free rein to your imagination. Yes, and the cottage, you know, is such a "bewitched" place where your landings constantly steal. Probably nothing can be done about it.
In general, 11 years ago, it was time to begin the story of the new garden. Together with buildings, a garden, a fruit orchard - its area is 28 acres. This place is very convenient for suburban life. We chose him for a long time. After all, they were looking for a place not just for the garden - for our new home! At that moment, our daughter was expecting a baby. And when she saw this place, she immediately said that this is exactly what we have been looking for so long. We decided that it was our granddaughter in absentia who helped us make a choice. Therefore, the garden was named after her - "Eve."
- Where did you have to start in a new place?
11 years ago there was a clean field. Even the soil was imported. Naturally, the rough work on the layout of the site had to be done using special equipment. We decided to create our garden in "pieces". And first they began to master the part that is located behind the house, the patio, so to speak. At that time, we were already experienced gardeners. Thanks to the cottage, books and magazines, we were already pretty good at plants, learned how to properly care for them.
The size of the new plot significantly exceeded the size of the grandmother's dacha, but, nevertheless, we moved a lot of our plants to a new place. True, I had to buy a lot. And this is where our knowledge came in handy. To save money, some plants were purchased at sales. Of course, they had to be treated and cared for. Books and magazines helped with garden planning. Vivid pictures seduced and gave hope that we can be no less beautiful.
How much does Eden cost?
- This hope was fully realized! Photos of your garden personally cause me simply childish delight. And with it, and, excuse me, the mercantile question about its value in dollar terms.
Do not be shy to say that the money invested ... unmeasured! At the same time, we carried out all landings and care on our own. Some plants were bought by adults and, naturally, they stand solidly. Black pine, for example, and Ginkgo. Retaining walls were made of stone, which was brought from the Crimea 13 years ago. Its value today has grown significantly.
Gardens with a small area and young owners can be equipped with small seedlings and wait for them to grow. We began to create our new garden at a fairly adult age. Today, having created the basis of the garden, we only buy small plants. We grow plants from seeds a lot, propagate by cuttings. Fortunately, we have an impressive experience. Eyes are afraid, but hands do!
It is impossible to accurately calculate the amount that we have invested in our garden. But I probably agree with the opinion of experts who claim that one hundred such gardens cost about a thousand dollars.
- Is the cost of plants so huge?
Not only. Plants, materials for paths, trellises for lianas, garden arches, various stands ... We, by the way, do not use garden figures. Probably outgrown. Roses and clematis in our garden cannot be imagined without pyramids and trellises. A separate item of expenditure is garden paths. After all, they carry a large functional load, and not only aesthetic. This does not mean that we only walk on paths, and on the lawn - easily!
But the cost of work, in general, cannot be estimated, because working on your site is a great pleasure ...
- And which plants of your garden are the most expensive? And do you know how many “residents” live in the Eva Garden today?
The plants that we planted in memory of our parents, the Canadian pine and Ginkgo, are the most expensive in both direct and figurative meaning. We took different parts of the garden (lawns) to work gradually. Each of these sites has its own name. So we do not get confused where it grows. It is impossible to count all the plants that grow in our garden today. Lot. We do not create any collections as such. We don’t need it. We simply strive, choosing plants, to take into account the wishes of all family members.
More recently, many peonies have been added to the garden. Roses are a separate issue. There are never many of them. For roses, I will always find a place in the garden, even when it seems that there is nowhere to plant. Actually, there’s already not enough space. Our plants grow and for some reason take up much more space than we originally allocated for them. Perhaps we did not very accurately calculate their size in the adult state. But also, as my husband says, they are so big because they feel good here ...
A job that never ends
- I understand that you had a clear plan for the development of the garden from the very beginning of its creation. Already implemented everything from the original plan?
From the very beginning, we decided to set up several recreation areas on the site. The Wine Room is one of them. It is a platform of old brick, which is surrounded by a fence of privet. In the center is an elm on a stem. True, he began to answer our demand soon - several years passed. Now it’s cool on a sunny day - elm branches serve as a tent.
I like to have a cup of tea here in the mornings, enjoy the silence or birdsong, flip through an interesting book or make an entry on duty in my diary. Yes, I am writing a diary. He “knows” everything that happens in our garden and in our family. In the evenings in the “wine room” we often arrange gatherings with our guests - relatives and friends. Enjoy the cool of the evening, discuss plans, speak, listen and keep quiet ...
The garden and orchard were also planned from the very beginning, but they began to realize them a bit later. Just at first the garden did not work out very well. In gardening, we did not have much experience. But no one forbade the use of someone else? The neighbors helped with advice, again - books, and then mastered the Internet.
- Does the garden take a lot of your time? What farming methods do you use?
My vegetable beds know only organic farming methods. Do not dig! The plane cutter is our best friend and helper. Of course, mulch and green manure. We practically do not use any chemistry in the garden. In the orchard, no matter how hard we try, but still, it happens, you have to resort to chemical treatment.
- Such a large garden is a daily work. What kind of work do you have to do every day? What equipment or garden tools do you use?
Our plants, although they have already grown, require our attention every day. They are like children. Some are more capricious, some are less. For example, hydrangeas in our garden require special attention, although they themselves are unpretentious plants. We have too much sun for them. So we water them constantly.
Regular care in our garden is provided, first of all, by mulching. Mulch eliminates the constant cultivation and weed control and makes the soil attractive to soil organisms. Sawdust and husk from seeds go to mulch ... In this case, a great help is a chopper.
In general, a good technique and a quality tool is something that gardeners do not recommend saving on. This is a huge help! We have an aerator, lawn mowers, and even a street vacuum cleaner. A good sprayer helps to quickly treat plants from pests. You can not do without an electric brush cutter. For a haircut and formation, it is simply necessary.
- What would you, as an experienced gardener, advise our readers who are just starting to create the garden of their dreams?
Patience, patience, and again patience. No need to try to cover everything at once. No need to wait for an instant result. Plants need time to show all their beauty. Try to initially consider the future sizes of skeletal planting plants. This will save you strength in the future - you will not have to transplant. While the plants are small, plant annuals and small perennials next to them. They change without problems.
- Tell us about your plans for the future. What else do you think your garden lacks?
There are many plans. I want to transfer the entire garden to high beds. It is necessary to redo the wooden steps, bring to mind a few more lawn plots ... It happens - once - and it comes to understanding that something urgently needs to be redone ... I look at the garden from the side and see its weaknesses. Gardening never ends!
Not the only garden
- And besides the garden, do you have any other hobbies, hobbies? Or is the garden your “only love”?
It brings me great pleasure weaving wreaths of fresh flowers. This is such a space for creativity! I like to carefully select plants for each wreath. This process is very disciplining me. I quickly try to finish all the housework and garden work in order to enthusiastically begin to create a new wreath. I love to see how the person to whom he was intended sincerely rejoices at the result of my work.
“And who are these lucky ones?”
Close, relatives, friends ... Children are in the city, but as a rule, they come to us for the weekend. In the summer we spend more time together. Our life as a country resident is similar to the life of many others - we grow fruits and vegetables, prepare conservation for the winter, experiment with our daughter in the kitchen - try new interesting recipes, come up with our own.
In my youth, I, like many, collected recipes and wrote them down in a notebook. Every year the number of notebooks became larger. We then tried with a minimal assortment of products to cook tasty and fast. Now the quantity of products and the number of recipes is huge, but the time for cooking is becoming less and less. Therefore, we are looking for recipes so that, with minimal time, you can surprise your loved ones. Over time, I realized that my mother-in-law was right, she worked as a pharmacist all her life: “do it by eye”. I always adhere to this rule in the kitchen. I'm glad that my granddaughter is already trying to cook. Fantasy and surprise. The kitchen is, like the garden, our creative workshop.
We often have guests - friends, good acquaintances, and even unfamiliar people. I am pleased to realize that with us they have the opportunity to eat, relax from the big city, enjoy nature.
- You are so “tasty” talking about your life! I would like to pack my suitcase and run away from the city ...
When Eve was young, she loved to meet dawn with her grandfather. Her husband lifted her every day at dawn. They left the house and watched the birth of a new day. And only after that the granddaughter returned to bed to inspect dreams. In the city, people do not have such an opportunity. Here we rejoice at sunrises and sunsets, admire the starry sky, in the morning we wake up not from the noise of public transport, but from the fact that the pheasant screams ... we, by the way, have a lot of them. We are already taking measures so that the whole crop is not eaten.
- Thank you, Lyudmila, for sharing with us a piece of your life outside the city. I am sure that your experience will be very useful and interesting for our readers, and will inspire many to create their dream garden.
